Ali J Chairperson
Ali J is an illustrator for the new generation. She believes strongly in bringing artwork off of walls and making them accessible via other means. Her illustrations are generally portraits of characters with red rosy cheeks, a sense of style, a flair for fashion and a strong sense of independence. Ali established her business in late 2007 which has since exceeded all expectations. Her artwork has been exhibited extensively and resides in collections worldwide. Giving emerging designers the ability to showcase their work, create a business and develop a plan is something that Ali believes strongly about. Made On The Left allows designers to not only get noticed, but it also helps to retain their talents here in Western Australia and not force them to move away. Phone - 0421695844 |
Dara Clemens Treasurer Dara’s background is in hospitality administration and has completed a BA in Classics/Ancient History & Fine Art as well as a Certificate in Furniture Design. Dara has always drawn, painted and created, however, only over the last 2 years has it evolved into something she will show the public. Her works are done on paper, canvas and wood and generally illustrate sentences, phrases and emotions she overhears or imagines. Despite her best efforts they end up being quite abstract or surreal. Creating a space where artists and those who wish to buy beautiful artistic things can interact on an intimate level is important. Which is why Dara loves the Made on the Left ethos. Lauren O'Brien Secretary Lauren and her label OSIER have been slowly but steadily making their impression on the local Perth handmade scene since 2006, with vintage-era curios, nature, and a flagrant disregard for colour-matching wheels all being part of the style and feel of what Lauren creates. Her work has been featured in independent fashion magazines like Frankie and Yen, and she hopes to see her work in more independent boutiques in the future. Lauren’s involvement in the Made On The Left movement stemmed from a strong belief in the DIY ethos of street artists and “non-crafty/country” handmade, and the belief that if you have enough guts and drive to make a real effort, you can make your handmade label into a sustainable business.

Sarah Gazia Boss of Marketing Sarah Gazia has a background in marketing and destination promotion, and has worked in this field representing state and local government organisations. Returning to Australia from London in late 2007, Sarah decided to jump in the deep end and start not one, but two businesses – a marketing and design consultancy, Two Dozen, with partner Moz Nugent and a handcrafted jewellery business. Odd Girl Out is Sarah’s jewellery brand. Inspired by retro styles and burlesque chic and utilising a range of materials from vintage findings to hand-formed polymer clay elements, Odd Girl Out encourages her wearers to ‘stand out from the crowd’! Sarah thinks that Made on the Left plays an important role not in supporting and promoting Western Australian designers, but also as a way of promoting Perth and Western Australia as culturally rich and interesting places for people to visit.. |

Holly Lake Memberships Holly always thought she’d grow up to be an artist and couldn’t imagine being anything else. She traveled widely as a child, but has always adored Western Australia. Holly studied ‘Special Art’ during high school, and spent every Saturday under the teaching of various “artists in residence” who encouraged her that it was possible to successfully make a living in WA as an artist. She went on to study Visual Arts and Literature at university, and taught for 4 years. In 2003, after life changing circumstances, a river of life began to flow out of her with such force; it brought with it a renewed passion for art, and release into the freedom of childlikeness in creativity. Hours upon hours were spent celebrating colour and texture with reckless abandon. A determination to remember the importance of “play” became a signature in her artwork, which covers many genres. Holly loves the underlying heartbeat of Made on the Left -with its mission to nurture and support creative talent in Western Australia. It was in fact through Made on the Left that she herself found her legs and began her clothing label ‘RawHemline’. Holly believes that WA is a place filled with undiscovered ‘treasures’ just waiting to be found…. |
Peta Galloway Vice Chairperson Peta has studied arts, fashion and textile design and arts management and has several years of experience in the arts and not for profit sector. She is currently working in the arts as well as being mum to a very chatty toddler. Her label petrafanella has been stocked across Perth and is currently available in her etsy store. She adores the ethos behind the arts and craft movement and dreams of one day running a small but successful label where she has a hand in every step of the creative process. http://www.createcraft.blogspot.com/

Lara Events Co-ordinator After leaving school Lara studied Fashion Design, something she had planned she would do ever since she was a child, as a love of textiles had been in her family for generations. Sitting in her grandmothers sewing room, looking through her tin of buttons, is one of her fondest memories. One that has led her to collect vintage buttons, fabrics and sewing ephemera. She enjoys trying to find ways to work some of her vintage finds into her Designs, or sometimes just one button will lead to the creation of a whole new project. After spending 10 years working in the often heady and surreal world
of the fashion industry in London and working with many well known
designers she felt it was time to bring her family back home to Perth
for a more relaxed life. |
